5 Things that Can Damage Your Carpets

06 November 2020

One type of floor covering that has been used by a lot of property owners is carpets. Carpets are textile floor coverings that are comprised of an upper layer of pile, which is attached to a back layer. This specific layer of the pile can be made from wool, woven nylon, polyester, or olefin fibres. High-quality carpets are often made with a higher twist number of fibres as well as a higher density volume of the tufts.

Despite their strong overall composition, carpets can still get damaged due to various reasons. Even with proper cleaning and maintenance, damages to carpets will still occur because of these following things and elements:

Dirt and Debris

Dirt, mud, grime, and other types of debris can easily damage any type of carpet, no matter how strong they are. Any debris that your shoes have picked up from outdoors can easily enter your property as you go back inside. And as these elements accumulate on your carpet, you can gradually see some changes over the appearance and build quality of your carpet until it deteriorates fully.

Spills and Stains

Another set of elements that can damage your carpets are spills and stains. Sometimes, we tend to accidentally spill our drink or food, which may subsequently get into the carpets. Spilling your drink on the carpets, especially if it has high acid content, can permanently leave some stain on your carpet. But aside from foods and drinks, spilling chemicals like bleach or oil on the carpet will not only leave some discolouration or stain, but they can also damage the carpet for good.

Furniture Pieces

Carpets normally cover the entire space of a room, allowing furniture pieces to be placed above their surfaces. While some carpets can withstand the weight of these things for a long time, others can quickly get damaged with furniture pieces. Furniture pieces and other heavy things can leave permanent dents in the carpet, which would then call for a replacement of the carpet. These damages may not be seen if the furniture stays in place, but once it is removed, they can be visible right away.

Household Pets

Household pets like cats and dogs usually tend to be a lot playful. With their sharp nails, they can swiftly create large rips and holes on the carpets as they scratch them continuously. Aside from their nails, they can also damage the carpets if they constantly urinate or take a dump on their surfaces. Their furious behaviours can easily lead to the deterioration and wear of your carpets.

Harmful Insects

Some insects may not be harmful to your carpets, but a lot of them can cause heavy damages to them. Some insects would just lay their eggs on your carpets. And if they are made from natural materials, the eggs, which would become larvae, would consume them until you finally noticed some damages on your carpets. Repairs on insect damages may still be fixed, especially if you have spotted them right away. Otherwise, replacing your carpets entirely may save you a lot compared to repairing them.

One way to avoid these carpet damages is to subject them to specialised carpet cleaning. If you want to know more about this type of cleaning, feel free to give us a call at A & K Blasch Cleaning.
